Breaking all the rules

Normally, I'm only interested in two wheels. Today, I make a tiny exception, and add the occassional third.

Really useful carrying bicycle cars. Used to transport goods from one side of the city to the next, or be the face of fruit and veggie stalls on sidewalks

Thing I noticed quite vividly is that Santiago is perfect for fixies or single speeds. I only saw one single speed (I was too slow to take a picture), but no fixies. You see, there is no room for 'nonsense' here. Fashion must be useful. Fixies are fashionable, but not always practical. So for the average Joe to pick up a fixie, I suspect it will be a long while before that scene takes off here. Soaking in all the similiarites and differences of a new city towards your own, is always curious don't you think?

It's refreshing to come to a city that is busy, yet still has a strong sense of courtesy. Pedestrians and cyclists (pedal and moto) get right of way - people are conscious of them - which is now so dissimilar to Sydney. It's as if in Sydney, we have become so self absorbed about our own business, we forget about others. Everybody is the centre of the universe, cept there can only be one centre - surely? Here in Santiago, everybody wants to go about their business but still let you go about yours in a mindful kind of way.

Maybe it is because of the surrounding magnificent mountains that soar above you, making you remember that we, as individuals, are but a small equation in the world. Or maybe, it is just the culture. In any case, I like it. A lot.
